Language barrier delays Myanmar-national's stabbing court case

MUAR:A Myanmar national was charged in the magistrate's court here today for allegedly stabbing a colleague in the stomach with a knife, causing serious injuries last week.

The accused, Win Zaw Latt, 42, did not record a plea as he failed to understand the charge read in Malay before Magistrate Suzana Mokhtar.

According to the charge, Win is accused of intentionally injuring a 35-year-old male colleague with a knife capable of causing death.

The incident reportedly occurred at a workers' dormitory in the Bakri Industrial area at 8.15 pm on Dec 8.

The charge, under Section 324 of the Penal Code, carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, a fine, whipping, or a combination of any two punishments upon conviction.

According to the police's record, the stabbing occurred at the worker's dormitory.

The victim was said to have approached Win, and asked to look at the knife he was holding, however, Win who was allegedly intoxicated, reacted by striking and stabbing the victim in the stomach.

The victim was rushed to Sultanah Fatimah Specialist and a police report was lodged at the Bakri police station the same day.

Police seized a 34-centimeter knife believed to have been used in the stabbing.

Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Muhamed Fauzi prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.

The court set Jan 2 for the next mention to facilitate the presence of a Myanmar-language interpreter.

The court also denied bail for the accused pending the next hearing.
