Sadao shooting poses no threat to Malaysia-Thailand border security forces

PADANG BESAR: The recent shooting incident in Sadao did not pose any threat to security forces stationed at the Malaysia-Thailand border here.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Shokri Abdullah said based on information fed by the Thai police, the shots were not directed towards the border security area.

"According to our counterparts in Thailand, prior to the incident, the two men were from Dannok. A friend to visit them at their rented house and brought along several pistols to show to them.

"The two men were excited about testing the firearms and rode a motorcycle to the location, about one kilometre away from the Malaysia-Thailand border.

"The men then fired several shots into the air and did not even target anyone. The distance between the location and the border security area is about one kilometre away," he said when contacted.

Shokri added that Thai police have arrested the duo and seized firearms used in the incident.

"I wish to stress that the Malaysia-Thailand border area is safe and under control with the presence of policemen and General Operations Force (GOF)," he said.

Recently, a video of a security camera recording of two men firing shots near the Malaysia-Thailand border in Padang Besar went viral.

The video has sparked concern over the safety of Malaysian security personnel manning the border.

Earlier today, Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said confirmed that the suspects, aged 21 and 28, were arrested in Songkhla, Thailand, last Friday.

He said the shooting incident occurred at 10.28am last Thursday when two General Operations Force (GOF) personnel were patrolling near the security checkpoint.
