KUALA LUMPUR: The police together with its Thailand counterpart arrested two Thai nationals suspected of firing shots at a security checkpoint along the border in Padang Besar, Perlis.
Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the suspects, aged 21 and 28, were arrested in Songkhla, Thailand, last Friday.
He said the shooting incident occurred at 10.28am last Thursday when two General Operations Force (GOF) personnel were patrolling near the security checkpoint.
"The personnel heard several gunshots from the direction of Thailand and saw two men riding a motorcycle in the neighboring country.
"They immediately reported the incident to the team for assistance before the suspects were seen leaving the area. Both personnel were unharmed," he said.
He said closed-circuit television camera footage showed the two suspects were believed to have come from a rubber plantation on a motorcycle.
He said the suspects stopped the motorcycle before pulling out a gun and firing about 10 shots toward Malaysia.
"The suspects were then seen collecting the shell casings before leaving the area, suspected of heading back into the rubber plantation."
The Malaysian police shared the clip with its Thailand counterpart, who later arrested the two suspects at a premises in Songkhla at 10.40am (Malaysian time), a day after the incident.
"During the interrogation, the suspects claimed to have borrowed the weapon from a friend.
"They admitted to firing the shots towards Malaysia to test the weapon. The weapon was returned to the friend after the incident," he said.
