Divorcee gets 26 months' jail for threatening his children, pointing sword at ex-wife [WATCH]

BATU PAHAT: A 43-year-old personal driver was sentenced to 26 months' jail and fined RM5,000 after he pleaded guilty to six charges of possessing, threatening, and pointing a sword at his ex-wife and children.

Nik Helmi Jamsus pleaded guilty to committing the offences when he was charged at the Sessions Court and magistrate's court here today.

In the Sessions Court, Nik Helmi was charged with possessing a 100cm sword at his house in Parit Haji Yusof, Sri Medan, at 10am on Dec 28.

The charge was framed under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' jail and whipping.

Deputy public prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed Ahmad prosecuted while Nik Helmi was not represented.

Judge Osman Affendi Mohd Shalleh sentenced Nik Helmi to RM5,000, in default of 10 months' jail, for the offence.

Nik Helmi also pleaded guilty to five other charges when he was produced at the magistrate's court.

For the first and second charges, Nik Helmi was charged with injuring his 13-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son at 10.30pm on Dec 27.

For the third charge, Nik Helmi was charged with threatening his son by uttering the words "mampus kau."

He also admitted to injuring and pointing the sword at his ex-wife during the same incident.

Magistrate Suhaila Shafi'uddin sentenced Nik Helmi to six months' jail for each of the first and second charges and four months' imprisonment for the third charge.

She also sentenced Nik Helmi to two months' jail for the fourth charge and four months' jail for the fifth charge.

She ordered that the jail sentences run concurrently, effective from his arrest on Dec 28.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip prosecuted the case, while the accused was represented by Normahani Raais from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
