Sabah Customs seizes 98kg of drugs worth RM2.8m

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Customs intercepted 98kg of methamphetamine and cannabis, with an estimated street value of RM2.89 million, in two separate seizures conducted on Nov 29 and Dec 9.

Assistant director-general Siti Mang said the first seizure occurred at MAS Cargo in Kota Kinabalu, where three parcels containing methamphetamine were seized.

"The drugs weighed 60.9kg and had an estimated street value of RM1.95 million," she said during a press conference at the enforcement complex in Sepanggar today.

The second seizure occurred at 10.30am, involving two parcels containing 20.2kg of methamphetamine.

"The drugs, concealed within A4 paper boxes, were estimated to be worth RM696,114," Siti said.

Between Nov 28 and Dec 20, Siti said, her team intercepted 28 parcels containing compressed dried plant material suspected to be cannabis.

"These seizures involved drugs weighing 17.1kg with an estimated value of RM250,038."

Investigations are underway under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death sentence or life imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.

At the same press conference, Siti revealed another seizure involving 50 boxes of chewing tobacco at Sepanggar Port on Jan 2.

The prohibited substance, valued at RM194,810, including tax, was confiscated after being found without a valid import permit.

"The modus operandi involved false declarations, violating Section 79 of the Customs Act 1967," Siti said.
