IGP: Cops probing all aspects of man gunned down in JB restaurant

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are looking into all aspects of the case of the man who was shot dead in front of a restaurant in Johor Baru, including his identity and background.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said everything was being looked into in terms of the case.

This is after all sorts of speculation about the man's identity and background has come to the fore since the shooting yesterday in Taman Setia Indah.

Razarudin told the New Straits Times police were aware of several messages circulated via social media and messaging applications involving the victim and his connections.

"The victims background and links are all part of the Johor police's investigations into the case.

"We want to also assure the public that the incident that took place was isolated," he said.

He added that various elements of the police force were on the ground conducting thorough investigations into this case to bring those responsible to justice while also maintaining public order and the safety of the community.

It was reported that a man was shot dead in front of a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah here in a shocking broad daylight attack yesterday.

Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat was reported as saying the 40-year-old victim had been at the restaurant with some friends when he was shot dead.

A 10-second video of chaos in front of the restaurant was posted on social media.

Several restaurant patrons had told the NST that a motorcyclist had passed by, followed by at least seven loud popping sounds.

Seconds later the victim fell and was heard screaming, even as patrons and others ran helter-skelter for cover.

It is learnt that the victim was a moneylender, and had been allegedly questioned by police in May last year on secret societies-related matters.

A reliable source said the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, adding that the incident was presumed to be linked to gang-related activities.
