KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat was told that existing laws on illegal gambling are being reviewed to make it more current and effective.
Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Finance Ministry was doing the review, which was necessary as gambling had gone online.
“The government is fully aware of the rampant illegal gambling activities in the country, including in Sibu, Sarawak,” he said,” he said in reply to a question by Alice Lau Kiong Yieng (PH-Lanang).
Muhyiddin said according to police statistics, a total of 297 raids were conducted on unlicensed gambling centres in Sibu between Jan 1, last year, and May 31.
“The operations led to the arrest of 439 people, seizure of 72 gambling machines and RM95,024 cash.
“The police will continue with the enforcement actions to curb the illegal gambling activities and eventually close down the premises,” he added.
