No Equinox Phenomenon tomorrow: Meteorological Department

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department has quashed rumours that the country will be hit by the dreaded Equinox Phenomenon tomorrow.

The rumour, which has gone viral on WhatsApp, claims that Malaysia will experience the Equinox Phenomenon tomorrow, when the midday temperature will reach 40 degrees Celsius.

A Meteorological Department spokesperson told the New Straits Times that the claims are false.

“The last time we experienced 40-degree Celsius temperatures was in 1998, when our country was hit by the El Nino Phenomenon.

“The temperature high forecasted for tomorrow is between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius.

“We ask for the public not to spread rumours and cause panic,” the spokesperson said, adding that the public should verify their information before spreading it.

The Equinox Phenomenon generally occurs twice a year, around March 20 or 21, and around Sept 22 and 23.
