DUNGUN: The driver of the trailer lorry, who hit and killed a man while he was changing a flat tyre at KM360.5 of the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2), near Bukit Besi, here, this morning, has been detained by police.
The 31-year-old man is being held at the Dungun police station lockup after surrendering himself at 1pm today.
District police chief Superintendent Ahmad Zailani Yaacub said the suspect, from Pasir Putih, Kelantan, who abandoned his vehicle at the scene right after the incident, was also tested positive for methaphetamine.
"He is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road and Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and causing death," he said.
In the 5.30am incident, the victim, Mohd Zalaini Mohd Shafee, 31, a labourer at a private company at Kemaman Supply Base, died on the spot from serious head and body injuries after the trailer lorry crashed into him.
His friend, Mohamad Abdul Azhim Suhairi, 18, who was with him in the Perodua MyVi said that they were on their way to Kemaman when the car suddenly had a flat tyre, forcing Zalaini to stop by the roadside.
Abdul Azhim escaped with light injuries in the incident.
