PUTRAJAYA: Two district police chiefs (OCPDs) and an inspector have been remanded for six days over their alleged involvement in a protection racket for gambling dens and massage parlours in Melaka.
The two senior cops are the Melaka Tengah and Jasin district police chiefs holding the ranks of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Deputy Superintendent (DSP), respectively.
The inspector, meanwhile, is attached to the Melaka police headquarters as part of its Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division (D7).
Magistrate Muhamad Safuan Azhar issued the remand order for the trio today after granting the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)’s application.
Their remand expires on May 22.
The three men, aged between 32 and 54, were clad in orange lock-up attire and shielded their faces from photographers when they arrived at the magistrate's court here at 3pm for their remand hearing, escorted by MACC officers.
They are being investigated under Sections 16 and 17 of the MACC Act 2009 for accepting and giving gratification.
The three men were picked up at between 12.40am and 4.05am this morning in Melaka and were brought here.
Earlier this morning, six men, including three police officers, were remanded for six days over allegations of bribery at the magistrate’s court here.
The men, aged between 31 and 50, were arrested in Melaka yesterday following simultaneous raids conducted between 9.30am and 9.50pm at several illegal gambling centres and massage parlours in the state.
The three police officers – two assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) and an inspector – are attached to the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters and the Jasin district police headquarters.
They are being investigated under the same Sections of the Act.
