PUTRAJAYA: The Melaka Tengah criminal investigation department chief who was arrested yesterday as part of a probe into a protection racket for vice dens in Melaka, has arrived at the magistrate’s court here to be remanded.
Deputy Superintendent T. Gunasagaran arrived at the court premises in a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) car at 9.10am today.
Clad in orange MACC lockup-attire, he was lit-up by the flashlights of journalists’ cameras, as he was ushered into the courtroom by several MACC officers.
The 49-year-old suspect was nabbed at his office at about 12.30pm yesterday to assist the anti-graft body in its investigation into a police protection racket for gambling dens and massage parlours in Melaka.
The MACC has so far arrested about a dozen men as part of the probe, including two district police chiefs and four cops.
Nine of them were further remanded for five days yesterday, including the Melaka Tengah and Jasin district police chiefs, two inspectors and two assistant superintendents of police (ASPs).
They were detained on suspicion of accepting bribes in exchange for providing protection to the illegal centres in Melaka for years.
Three other remanded men are civilians, one of whom had allegedly acted as the middleman who helped collect kickbacks for the officers.
All were arrested in simultaneous raids conducted by MACC last week.
