SUNGAI PETANI: A total of 17,147 accident cases were recorded nationwide during the first 11 days of Ops Selamat 11 which kicked-off on June 18.
Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director, Senior Assistant Commissioner Sharul Othman Mansor said the figure is an increase from the 15,527 accident cases recorded during the same period last year.
However, Sharul said the number of fatalities dropped to 185 people compared to 233 people last year.
“We issued a total of 186,000 traffic summonses involving various traffic offences,” he said when met after inspecting traffic operation at Jalan Gurun – Sungai Petani here today.
Sharul said the major portion of the accident cases involved motorcyclists and pillion riders followed by car drivers and passengers.
He said most of the accident cases took place on federal roads.
Shahrul also said that traffic police are anticipating that the number of vehicles taking to the road in the last few days of Ops Selamat will see an increase when more people return to the city after the Hari Raya holidays.
Based on records, there are more than 27.3 million registered vehicles on the road nationwide, he added.
Ops Selamat 11 is being held in conjunction with the Hari Raya festive holidays and will end on July 2.
