Police: 39 died in accidents in two days

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 3,268 road accidents and 39 fatalities nationwide were recorded over the past two days during the Deepavali celebration.

Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said 38 of these accidents were fatal.

He said 1,882 accidents, including 15 fatal accidents and 16 deaths, were recorded on Wednesday.

There were another 1,386 accidents, including 23 fatal accidents and 23 fatalities yesterday.

"The two-day breakdown of the fatalities includes 32 motorcyclists, four people in cars , one person in a lorry , a cyclist, and one person in a multipurpose vehicle (MPV)," he said when contacted by Harian Metro.

He added that, in summary, the daily accident count over the two days decreased by 496 cases, yet there was an increase in fatal accidents, which rose by 23 cases.

He said the overall death toll also increased by seven.

"The Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department advises all road users to ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition and comply with all regulations. Motorists should drive considerately and show tolerance towards other road users.

"We urge all road users to plan their journeys, especially for long-distance travel.

"Stay alert to your surroundings and be mindful of current information provided by government agencies and highway concessionaires," he said.
