Cop sentenced to six years in prison, fined RM30,000 for corruption

SUNGAI PETANI: A 54-year-old police inspector was sentenced to six years' jail and a fine of RM30,000 by the Sessions Court here after finding him guilty of three counts of corruption committed six years ago.

Syed Othman Konchong, was convicted under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and two count under Section 16(a)(b) of the same Act, for soliciting and accepting RM1,700 bribe from a contractor Fauzadin Arafadin.

According to the facts of the case, Syed Othman, who is attached to the Yan district police headquarters' management department, had solicited and accepted RM1,700 bribe from Fauzadin through sergeant Abd Hamid Saad on July 14, 2011.

The bribe was an inducement to not take action against Fauzanudin for hiring immigrant workers without a valid permit at the Teroi Health Clinic construction site in Yan, on July 2011.

The accused was also convicted of soliciting RM2,000 from the same contractor as an inducement not to take action against him for hiring immigrant workers without a valid permit at the Teroi Health Clinic in Yan on June 2011.

Judge Mohammad Khalid Ab Karim sentenced the accused to two years of imprisonment and RM10,000 for each charge. He ordered the jail sentences to run separately beginning today.

The court also ordered him to pay RM2,000 prosecution charges within a week.

A stay of execution for the jail sentences was allowed by the court, pending an appeal to the High Court by the defence.

However, the father of four was taken to the prison as he failed to raise enough fund to pay the fine at the closing of the court's operating hours.

Syed Othman was represented by lawyer Nurliyana Mohd Radzi while MACC deputy public prosecutor Hafiizh Abu Bakar prosecuted.
