IPOH: The Perak state government has declared the Matang sub-district as a "rabies infected area" effective today, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said.
Zambry said measures were taken to contain the spread of the disease.
"This is an isolated case. So far only one case has been reported but we are taking steps to contain it. Pet owners in this sub-district are not allowed to take their dogs out until further notice," he said at a press conference here.
He said the authorities were carrying vaccination exercise on all pets within a 1km radius following the death of a dog that bit two children in Kuala Sepetang, Taping on July 4.
VSD director-general Datuk Dr Quaza Nizamuddin Hassan Nizam had yesterday confirmed a complaint from the pet owner July 13.
The dog shown clinical symptoms such as vomiting, having no appetite, fever and cramps, five days after it has bitten the children. It died on July 12.
The girls, aged 12 and 11, recovered from the wounds and did not show systemic signs of illness but are being closely monitored at the Taiping Hospital.
