Debt to GDP ratio reduced, says Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today said the nation's debt to gross domestic product (GDP) ratio is under control as it currently stands at 52.5 per cent from the previous 54 per cent.

Najib, who is also finance minister, also said the country’s fiscal deficit is estimated to reduce from 6.7 per cent to 3 per cent by the end of year.

He said this in reply to a question by Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR-Permatang Pauh) during a question and answer session in Parliament today.

She had also asked Najib on how the government planned to settle 1Malaysia Development Bhd's (1MDB) debt.

“Statements with regards to the 1MDB case have already been issued. It is not due to the government not being able to pay back the debt but more of technical issues,” he said.

“It is in the ministry’s best interest to cater to incentives such as the Felda packages for the settlers and benefits for the retired armed forces unlike the opposition. They (the opposition) are only giving false hope,” he added.
