Suit against Pandikar tarnishes Parliament's good name: Azalina

KUALA LUMPUR: The Petaling Jaya Selatan MP's suit against Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia has tarnished the Parliament's good name.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said: "The action of Hee Loy Sian has jeopardised the freedom of Parliamentary institutions as enshrined in the Federal Constitution,"

Article 63 (1) of the Federal Constitution has provided for the Privileges of Parliament which clearly states "the validity of any proceedings in either House of Parliament or any committee thereof shall not be questioned in any court."

"As a lawmaker, PKR MPs should be more aware what is contained in the Constitution regarding rights and privileges of the Parliament," she said.

Whereas, the Dewan Rakyat's Standing Order 99 states, "The decision of Speaker upon any point of interpretation of any of these Standing Orders,or upon any matter of practice, shall be final, subject to a substantive motion moved for that purpose, and the Speaker may from time to time issue rulings thereon."

"In this regard, the action of the PKR MP also reflected that they deliberately want to polemicise this issue to bring the court, while there is another way that can be done including submitting a proposal to the Speaker.

"Even the issue raised had been explained by the Speaker in a press conference held last week," she said.
