KUALA LUMPUR: There is no political interference or pressure on the country's judiciary as the government upholds the separation of powers principles.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said gave the assurance and said that Malaysia's judiciary system has long been respected for its independence.
"We ensure that there is no political interference behind-the-scenes phone calls, or pressure.
"What needs to be resolved, we just need to explain it in a professional manner to the system led by the Chief of Justice today.
"This is how the government must respect the separation of powers," she said in her speech at the International Arbitration Congress 2024 organised by Asian International Arbitration Centre here today.
Present were AIAC director Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Sua; former chief justice Tun Arifin Zakaria, who is also Inns of Court Malaysia president; and Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation chairman Tan Sri David Wong Dak Wah.
Azalina also called on the people to give the current government a chance to complete the remaining two and a half years of its term so that promised legal reforms can be implemented.
"We are doing our best for the people. As such, please evaluate later (during the next general election) whether you want this government to continue administering or if these politicians should remain ministers," she said.
Later at the event, Azalina witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between AIAC, ICM and BICAM.
