[VIDEO] Star of Bangsar: Take a stroll through Bangsar's Sunday Night Market

KUALA LUMPUR: Attracting visitors from both near and far, the famous Bangsar Sunday Night Market offers a huge array of goods, from fresh vegetables and flowers, to seasonal local fruits and traditional Malaysian snacks.

Goods at this densely-packed pasar malam are fast-selling and sought-after, even though it is just a fraction of the length of Taman Connaught's famous market. In fact, by 7.30pm, half of the stalls usually pack-up and leave, their stocks having sold-out.

Many of Bangsar Market’s vendors are second generation hawkers of family-run businesses who keep the pasar malam tradition alive – in the centre of one of KL’s most chic neighbourhoods.

Sangeetha Murugan, 38, started a fruit and vegetable stall at the market 12 years ago with her sisters.

She follows in her father’s footsteps and is committed to offering high-quality goods at affordable prices, with a choice of more than 30 types of fruits and vegetables.

Her fresh, farm-grown vegetables and fruits are magnets for many customers.

One of her regular patrons, Kiran Sharma, 57, always shops for vegetables there with his mother, Nirmla Devi, 85.

“Every time we come here, we buy two large bags of vegetables. The freshness is guaranteed,” Kiran said.

Another vendor, Raju Santhirajeharan, 64, started an Indian snack stall here more than 20 years ago with his wife.

“We have foreign and local regular customers. Once they try our snacks, they come back again. The snacks are homemade and produced in a small amount. We cook a new batch every three days,” he said.

Ang Tuck Foong, 22, inherited his 14-year-old Asam Laksa stall from his mother. He learned the tools of the trade from his mother and the recipe was passed down from his late father.

Ang’s regular customer, Michael Hong, 59, said the authentic taste of the laksa is similar to those found in Penang. His many, many other customers agree.

To get to the Bangsar Sunday Night Market, alight at the Bangsar LRT station, which is just a 30-minute walk away; or catch RapidKL bus U87 from Pasar Seni, and get off at the Bangsar Village shopping centre.
