Disciplinary problems in schools around Putrajaya moderate

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal district Education Department has implemented intervention programmes for two schools, which have landed in the Education Ministry's list of hotspot schools with disiciplinary issues.

Its Humanity Development Management Sector acting chief Kamaluddin Mohd Kassim said the department was aware of the issues faced by these two schools and had taken the necessary measures to address them.

"Although the discipline problem at these two schools is rated as moderate, the department constantly put in efforts to reduce discipline misconduct not only in these two schools, but at other schools in the administrative capital as well.

"Among the intervention programmes implemented for the school students are the National Transformation training programme for all Form 4 students; Zero to Hero programme and self-identity development programme for students with personality issues.

"These programmes are aimed at raising and build students' self-identity," he told the New Straits Times when contacted today.

Kamaluddin said the department was also in the midst of strengthening the management of discipline at school level through various efforts including seminars on school safety and on managing student discipline.

"For at-risk students, the department has informed schools to conduct focus group counselling and mentor-mentee programme to monitor and rehabilitate these students,"

The rate of discipline misconduct in Putrajaya was only at 0.01 per cent, he said, adding that 8,321 students in the administrative capital have undergone federal district-level intervention programmes in the past eight months.

"At the same time, supportive programmes are being carried out at the school level," Kamaluddin added.

Other agencies and associations such as the Putrajaya police and resident associations have also played their part to churn out youngsters with strong values and morales.

Federal Territory Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, he said, had formed the Putrajaya Volunteers (V4Putrajaya) programme, which saw the involvement of about 4,000 students, describing it as an effective programme in humanity development.
