Girl tries to harm herself in school compound

KAJANG: A secondary school student suffering emotional distress tried to slit her wrists with a knife at school.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said they received a report about the incident on Tuesday.

"The report claims that a 14-year-old girl tried to harm herself while suffering mental distress at a school at Bandar Baru Bangi.

"The girl who was within the school compound at the time held a knife and threatened to slit her wrists," he said in a statement on today (Wednesday).

He said the girl was talked out of doing it.

"Her parents came immediately to school and said they had not seen any change in her behaviour.

"They also claimed the girl had never complained about any trouble in or outside of school.

"Checks with the school also showed that the girl did not have any disciplinary problems prior to the incident."

Naazron said the girl was taken to a clinic for a mental health evaluation in order to find out why she reacted aggressively.

"We urge the community especially family members to seriously supervise and monitor their children.

"This is especially important in order to monitor children's mental health and take early intervention measures to avoid any untoward incidents.

"Advise and counselling can also be given through the Talian Kasih at 15999 or via any certified counsellor," he said.
