Indonesian flag misprint: Jokowi says 'no need to make issue any bigger'

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesian president Joko Widodo has called for a end to the controversy over a misprint of the Indonesian flag in a 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games booklet.

While saying that the misprint was "deeply regrettable," he also noted that there is no need to prolong the issue.

"The incident is deeply regrettable. But there's no need to make it any bigger," he was quoted as saying by Indonesian daily Detik News.

He said the matter should not be dwelled upon any longer by Indonesians in general. Joko said he is now awaiting an official apology from Malaysia.

"We are awaiting an official apology from the Malaysian leadership as this involves a question of pride and nationalism. So we are waiting for a formal apology.

"There is no need to make the issue any bigger," he reiterated.

The matter came to light yesterday when Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, shared the image of the misprint on Twitter.

The Indonesian flag was printed upside down, with a white and red motif instead of the reverse.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin in an immediate reply, had apologised to his Indonesian counterpart

The mistake, he said, was purely unintentional.

Khairy also visited Imam and the Indonesian delegation this afternoon to personally convey his apologies.

A police investigation has been launched over the misprint.
