TM offers free internet at 5,800 hotspots nationwide with i-foundit! app

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia's Unifi service will be available free of charge at 5,800 hotspots around the country via the national telco's 'i-foundit!' app until Dec 31.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in launching the 'i-foundit!' app today, said this is part of TM's answer to the government's call for higher speed internet connection in tandem with the rapid growth of the digital industry.

"We were even talking about internet data at double the speed and half the price, which TM says they can deliver soon, by 2019," said Najib.

The 'i-foundit!' app can be downloaded via the Google Play Store or App Store soon.

The app locates wifi hotspots and connects its users to them. After Dec 31, users will only be charged 10 sen per hour for data use over the app.

At the same function, Najib said Malaysia's multi billion ringgit investments in the United States recently have been taken out of context by other parties to confuse the people.

Najib said the procurement of 25 Boeing aircraft for Malaysia Airlines and real estate investments by the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) were decisions made by these organisations' respective investment panels made up of professionals.

"It wasn't me who decided," said Najib, addressing a crowd of over 28,000 Telekom Malaysia management and staff.

"It was the investment panels with professionals and experts, who see the benefits of such investments for the workforce in the country, who are EPF contributors.

"Where investments locally usually generate profits of about seven per cent, by investing in the United States, the benefits will be 11 per cent, which will be returned in the form of dividends for EPF contributors.

"This has been distorted by 'the other side' to confuse the people and make it seem like we are just going and spending billions in the US for nothing," he said.

Najib said such investments are part of a global investment strategy aimed at bringing profits to the country, which will eventually benefit the people.
