Mall cleaner discovers wallet containing RM12,600; hands it over to management

KUALA LUMPUR: A cleaner discovered a wallet containing foreign currency valued at RM12,666 at a popular shopping mall at Jalan Imbi here on Oct 9 – and promptly handed it over to the authorities.

The wallet, containing 30 US dollar notes and Syrian currency, was discovered in the diaper changing room on the third floor of the shopping mall. It held no identification documents.

Police are now urging the owner to come forward to the Tun HS Lee police station to reclaim what they misplaced.

"(We) did not find any identification documents in the wallet. Apart from the money, only a few photographs, believed to be of the owner, were in the wallet," Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Mohd Sukri Kaman told reporters yesterday.

He thanked the cleaner for her honesty in handing over the wallet to the management of the shopping centre, which subsequently surrendered it to the police.

He said that such deeds should be emulated by others to create a responsible and honest society.

The cleaner, Samona Marhama, 35, said she turned in the wallet out of a sense of responsibility, which she feels everyone should have.

"I found the wallet and suspected that someone may have left it behind. Without thinking for long, I handed it over to the management," she said. -- Bernama
