GEORGE TOWN: A factory cleaner was charged today with two counts of murder following an incident in Ayer Itam here last Thursday.
No plea was recorded after the charges against Muhammad Farhan Izzuddin Rosman, 32, were read out before magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi.
The proceedings took place at Penang Hospital, where the accused is receiving treatment.
On the first charge, Farhan allegedly murdered Zulkifli Ibrahim, 62, in front of the lift at Block 1 Sri Ivory Apartment, Jalan Lengkok Angsana, Ayer Itam, Penang, between 12.54pm and 1.25pm on Nov 7.
On the second charge, he was accused of murdering Siti Zulaila Zulkifli, 30, at the same place and time.
Both charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code carry the death penalty or imprisonment for no less than 30 years and no more than 40 years, and at least 12 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor M. Darrshini prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.
Nadratun set Jan 15 for the next mention of the case.

It is that believed the female victim had rejected the suspect's advances, which led to the incident.
The woman was reportedly returning home from work when she was approached by the suspect, who was armed with a knife and stabbed her.
Her father, who witnessed the attack, attempted to intervene but was also stabbed.
