New law to remove, dispose abandoned vehicles to be introduced

KUALA LUMPUR: The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is mulling introducing a new law to take away and dispose of abandoned vehicles in various locations including parking lots.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said at present, there are about eight million vehicles being left or abandoned on the roads, parking lots and other locations.

"Currently, we have no laws, rules or policies that enables us to remove these vehicles and address the issue," he told reporters at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Wan Junaidi said this was among some of the new laws the ministry was planning to enact which included a national water policy and e-waste laws.

He said they were also looking into amending the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 to empower the ministry to take action and charge those who trade wildlife illegally through the internet.

"The problem now is that records of online wildlife trading activities could not be accepted in court as evidence, to charge the perpetrators.

"We are in now in talks with the Attorney General to address this. At the moment, the ministry is looking into amending the act comprehensively including to allow the meting out of heavier penalties for perpetrators such as asset seizures.

"For example, if they are found to have been selling wildlife in their homes, we would be able to seize these houses." he added.
