Penang floods: 42 evacuation centres set up, more than 2,000 people rescued

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 42 evacuation centres have been set up in Seberang Perai Tengah, Seberang Perai Utara, Barat Daya and Timur Laut in Penang following the flash floods that crippled the state today.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) said 2,064 people from 509 families have been evacuated as of 8am, today.

In a statement, Nadma said 22 evacuation centres have been set up at Seberang Perai Tengah with 1,119 victims; 14 centres in Seberang Perai Utara with 561 victims; four centres in Barat Daya (243 victims) and two in Timur Laut (141 victims).

According to the statement, continuous heavy rain is expected to hit Penang as forecast by the Meteorological Department.

A source from Nadma said the agency has increased its preparedness level to face the flash floods.
