Penang Hill funicular train service halted following landslide

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Hill funicular train service has been suspended following a landslide which covered part of its track, triggered by heavy rain late Saturday.

A 20-second video has since made its way into social media yesterday, showing the severity of the landslide.

The video also showed how a train was unable to continue its journey downhill.

In the video, an unidentified man is heard saying in Hokkien that the train stopped about 20ft before the landslide site.

“This (the landslide) is terrible.

“It happened almost at the middle and the train could not continue its journey,” he added.

Penang Hill Corporation (PHC), via its Facebook page, announced that the train service has been temporarily suspended until further notice due to extreme bad weather and for safety reasons.

“Every effort is being made to normalise operations as soon as possible.

“Hikers are particularly advised to refrain from doing so for the time being until further notice,” it said.

PHC general manager Cheok Lay Leng had reported said one train’s windscreen was damaged due to a fallen tree branch.

He had also said that parts of the railway tracks were covered in mud and debris from the strong winds and rain last night (Saturday), and work is underway to clear the tracks.

All visitors on the hill were safely brought down and no one was stranded or injured during the storm.
