PORT DICKSON: The public will be able to observe the ‘Geminids meteor shower’ phenomenon at the Teluk Kemang Observatory for three days, beginning Dec 13.
Teluk Kemang Observatory assistant manager Muzamir Mazlan said the public would be able to view the phenomenon starting from 11.30pm.
“The phenomenon is dubbed ‘Geminids meteor shower’ for its starting point from the Gemini constellation, at the north side of the skies, and two meteors are expected to appear each minute.
“For this school holiday season, I invite the public to witness the phenomenon without using telescopes,” he told Bernama here recently.
Muzamir noted the meteor shower was suitable to be observed during these dates as the moonlight was dimmer due to the waning crescent moon, or sometimes referred to as the old moon.
He said during the phenomenon, the observatory would also organise a photography contest for visitors, with an entry fee of RM10, and offering the main prize of RM300.
“Participants only need to submit their best picture but it must be taken at the observatory,” he added.--BERNAMA
