Protest at US embassy may have breached Peaceful Assembly Act: Police

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will open an investigation paper on a protest demonstration against the US government's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital at Jalan Tun Razak here today.

Although the protest in front of the US embassy here was peaceful and went off without incident, several actions are believed to have breached the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, including the bringing of children to the demonstration and an attempt to barge through police’s human barricade.

The demonstration also obstructed traffic as protesters gathered in the centre of one of the city’s busiest arteries.

It is learnt that two men, who were members of Keadilan and Umno, were detained for disobeying police orders, but they were later released.

The protest also saw a group of men burning an effigy of US President Donald Trump.

“We will lodge a report and open an investigation paper,” said Wangsa Maju police chief Superintendent Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif, who added that police and the Light Strike Force team were deployed to the area to maintain order.

He said the team managed to control the crowd, which was estimated at 1,500 people.

The crowd dispersed at about 3.30pm.
