PAPAR: A total of 109 dilapidated schools in Sabah will undergo repair and upgrade works under the Industrialised Building System this year.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said the process of upgrading and repairing rundown schools would be managed by the Education Ministry via the state education and public works departments.
She said a special committee was formed to monitor the project to ensure its smooth implementation.
“A total of 109 primary schools have been identified across the state, including in the districts of Tenom, Semporna, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Kinabatangan,” she told reporters after the launching the Back To School Tour Programme at SK Tanaki here, today.
In Papar district, the schools identified for repair and upgrade works are SK Mook, SK Mandalipau, SK Beringgis, SK Benoni and SK Limputong.
Of the 109 schools, Rosnah said the repair and upgrade works for 74 primary schools would be handled by the state education department while the rest would be under the purview of the state Public Works Department.
The Papar member of parliament said the works were expected to commence in March and to be completed within four months.
She also said the government had allocated RM1 billion for the upgrade and repair works, which will be carried out in two phases.
She said RM500 million would be utilised for each phase, and that the second phase would take place next year.
Earlier during in the event, Rosnah presented school bags and items contributed by Plus Malaysia (Berhad) to some 300 pupils.
