GEORGE TOWN: Current Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Yew Tung Seang will be the new MBPP mayor, replacing Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif, who will be the next United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) executive director.
The decision was made following the state executive council meeting earlier today for the appointment of Yew as the new mayor, while MBPP engineering department director Addnan Mohd Razali will replace Yew as the new secretary of the local council.
State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow, who made the announcement, said Maimunah’s last day as MBPP mayor would be on Jan 19.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new mayor and secretary will be held on Jan 22.
“It was such a pleasure to work with Datuk Maimunah, even though it was for a short time. I wish her good luck on her new endeavours at the international stage.
“I have learned so many things under her leadership on Sustainable Development Goals. We will continue to practise the culture of One Team, One Voice, One Mission to elevate MBPP to a higher level,” said Yew in his speech today.
Maimunah will be the first Asian to hold the post of executive director at UN-Habitat later this month.
She will be stationed in Nairobi, Kenya, for four-years.
