Anwar presents appointment letter to new KL Mayor Maimunah

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today presented a letter of appointment to the new Kuala Lumpur Mayor, Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif, who assumes the role tomorrow.

He said Maimunah's appointment had been approved by the King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, in accordance with Section 4(2) of the Federal Capital Act 1960.

"I believe she is the right person to lead Kuala Lumpur City Hall, given her nearly four decades of experience in urban planning and community development, having led various institutions both domestically and internationally.

"This includes her experience as the mayor of the Penang Island City Council and president of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council, as well as her role as president of the Malaysian Association of Local Authorities (MALA).

"Furthermore, it is noteworthy that she has also served as the executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Kenya, being the only Asian woman to have held this position.

"I hope that her extensive experience will be utilised to improve the quality of life for Kuala Lumpur's residents and elevate the image, reputation, and stature of this city to new heights, insyaAllah," he said in a Facebook posting.

Maimunah's appointment was announced earlier today by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

In making the announcement, Dr Zaliha expressed her gratitude to outgoing KL mayor Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh for his dedicated contributions and leadership throughout his tenure.
