Three deadly roads identified in Perlis ahead of CNY break

PADANG BESAR: Three road stretches in Perlis have been identified as accident-prone areas ahead of the coming Chinese New Year holidays next week.

Perlis Road Safety Department director Kalai Kumar Periyasamy said they are Jalan Kangar to Alor Star, Jalan Kangar to Padang Besar and the Kuala Perlis highway heading towards Changlun in Kedah.

He said based on statistics recorded last year, 60 per cent of accidents in the state occurred on the three roads.

“Last year the state recorded a total of 1,924 accident cases with more than half occurring at the three main roads. Most accident cases involved motorcyclists and pillion riders,” he told reporters after launching the Chinese New Year Road Safety Campaign 2018 at SMK Padang Besar.

The campaign was launched by Perlis Transport and Regional Development Committee chairman Asmaiza Ahmad.

Kalai Kumar advised residents who live along the three stretches to be cautious when using the road during the festive holidays.

“The traffic volumes is expected to become heavier during the holidays and locals who use the stretch for their daily activities need to be more alert,” he said.
