KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for a chest infection, following a bout of coughing.
The institute today confirmed that the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman was admitted last night and is currently receiving treatment at its general ward.
“Dr Mahathir will be admitted for a few days to allow for treatment and observation,” said IJN in a statement issued in an email to the press this morning.
The institute stressed that visits are restricted to close family members.
Dr Mahathir had earlier postponed a PPBM programme, scheduled for today, on his doctors' advice.
According to PPBM programme coordinator Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir, the 92-year-old party chairman was told to rest by his doctors due to unspecified health reasons.
No new date was given for the Bentong programme, which was meant to canvas support for the opposition alliance, besides intimidating Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai who is MCA's Bentong Member of Parliament.
Last year, the Pakatan Harapan chairman had to call off two fundraising dinners in Temerloh and Kluang after coming down with the flu.
