Kuok's contribution to Malaysian economy acknowledged by government

KUALA LUMPUR: The government acknowledges and respects tycoon Robert Kuok's contribution to the Malaysian economy.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said that this is seen in the statement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday.

"The PM has mentioned very clear that we respect Robert Kuok as he is an entrepreneur that made the (Malaysia's) economy successful.

"We give our highest appreciation to his efforts in contributing to the economy.

"He is an icon for the business community," said Liow, who is also MCA chairman.

"It is the government's position. PM has voiced it out. I had voiced it out. We appreciate our successful economic entrepreneurs who help the country," he said.

Liow was commenting on Najib's statement yesterday, where he (Najib) welcomed Kuok's expression of deep appreciation for opportunities given to him (Kuok).

Liow was speaking to the media during Media Prima Bhd's Chinese New Year celebration at Sime Darby Convention Centre here today.

On whether Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz should apologize to Kuok over his alleged attacks on him, Liow said that he would rather not go into the matter.

"He (Nazri) should explain himself," said Liow.

"I wish to emphasise that we have raised the concern of the Chinese community to the Cabinet. The Cabinet had deliberated and recognised the contribution by Robert Kuok," he said.
