Sabah government on full alert after earthquake in Ranau

KOTA KINABALU: The state government will be on alert following the earthquake which measured 5.2 on the Ricther scale last night.

Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman said all the relevant government agencies were on standby to ensure the safety of the people in the affected areas.

He advised the public not to panic as the situation was being closely monitored after the earthquake struck at 9.06pm last night in Ranau, promoting an emergency evacuation of people on Mount Kinabalu.

“We are thankful that everyone descended safely from the mountain,” he said, adding the suspension of climbing activities was the right thing do in the name of safety.

Three aftershocks were recorded by the Malaysian Meteorological Department after the earthquake, which was the strongest after the June 5, 2015, tragedy on Mount Kinabalu when 18 people were killed.
