KUALA LUMPUR: In conjunction with the upcoming 14th General Election, AirAsia is offering fixed fares as low as RM99 to encourage Malaysians to return home to cast their ballots.
"Because of your overwhelming response to vote for #GE14, we’re launching fixed fares TONIGHT. All fares available on airasia.com, #forthepeople," said AirAsia in a Facebook post today.
For the travelling period of between May 8 and 9, passengers travelling within Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia can purchase a ticket for RM99, while those travelling between Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak only have to fork out RM129.
Malaysians who wish to travel between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, meanwhile, would only pay RM199 for a ticket.
This comes three days after AirAsia announced its decision to waive flight change fees for bookings where the travel date falls on polling day.
Meanwhile, its group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, on Twitter last night, said the airline would freeze any unsold seats on the day before and after polling day and that the seats will be on low fares.
"We are going to delpoy AirAsia X 330 at times it’s not flying. Revenue team working overtime to get this done. Say thanks to them."
More than 14.9 million voters will go to the polls on May 9 for the GE14.
Nomination date is set for April 28, while early voting will take place on May 5.
This marks the fourth time in the country’s history that polling day is held on a weekday.
May 9 has been declared a public holiday to enable Malaysians to vote, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement on Wednesday.
