Man saves toddler from Kota Belud house fire by dropping him from 2nd floor balcony

KOTA BELUD: A man was forced to take extreme measures to save his son and himself in a house fire in Kampung Piasau, here yesterday.

In the 4.25pm incident, Wilson, 28, found himself and his 3-year-old son trapped on the second floor of their home, which was engulfed by flames.

Sixteen other members of their family had managed to escape the premises and were gathered outside the house, calling out to Wilson.

With encouragement from his family members, Wilson dropped his son from the second-floor balcony of the house. The boy landed safely in the arms of his relatives on the ground.

Wilson then leapt to safety.

The entire 18-member family is safe, and temporarily staying at the house of their neighbour, Winnie Saupi, 35.

But their two-storey home is 90 per cent destroyed, and all their belongings – including a Modenas Kriss 110 motorcycle and RM4,500 in cash – are lost.

District Fire and Rescue station chief Rozlan Osman said they received a distress call at 4.28pm, and a team of 10 firefighters in two fire engines were sent to the scene.

"The team managed to control the fire by 5.26pm," he said, adding that the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
