KUALA LUMPUR: A 32-year-old Royal Malaysian Navy officer broke an 84-year-old tradition when she became the first woman from rank and file to receive the RMN’s Sailor of the Year award this morning.
Amisah Kuiming from Sabah received the award from First Admiral Datuk Muhamad Ridzwan Abd Rahman during the Ceremonial Parade in conjunction with the 84th RMN Day celebration held at KD Sri Gombak in Jalan Padang Tembak here today.
Two others who received the same award were Warrant Officer I of the Tactical Warfighter, Mohammad Han Mohd Newaz,and Warrant Officer II Tactical Warfare, Muhammad Aidil Othman.
Ridzwan inspected the guard of honor earlier on behalf of the Commander of the RMN, Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin who could not be present.
Six platoons took part in the parade, including 32 officers and 132 navy personnel.
Speaking to the press after the ceremony, Amisah, from Membakut, Sabah and currently serving at the Human Resources Management headquarters, said serving as a Navy personnel was not easy because of the unexpected challenges.
“Alhamdulillah, this is my best achievement after serving for 10 years in the RMN.
“This award is testimony that the RMN always appreciates its work force, including women, regardless of the rank and gender. I’m truly very proud” she said.
She said the challenges were mostly at sea, especially when they had to brave uncertain weather conditions, having to compete alongside strong males on board.
“I can proudly say that all thanks goes to my family, friends, superiors and coaches who have been my greatest encouragement,” she said.
