New MACC chief to be appointed on May 15: Tun M

PUTRAJAYA: The new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner will be appointed tomorrow following the resignation of Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Dzulkifli resigned on his own accord.

He said he had met with several senior officers from MACC to discuss Dzulkifli’s replacement.

“We will appoint someone to head MACC and announce this tomorrow.

“It was his choice to resign. He can go on leave but he chose to quit. If investigations show that he was involved in any wrongdoings, action will be taken against him,” he said in a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here today.

He did not rule out the possibility that more senior government officials will be investigated.

“Not only him (Dzulkifli), other officers will also be investigated, too. But this will take time as we need to follow the rules and procedures,” he said.

Dzulkifli resigned this morning and had sent in his letter of resignation to chief secretary to the government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa at 8am.

Dzulkifli, 50, was appointed to head MACC on Aug 1, 2016 to replace Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed.

Yesterday, it was reported that Abu Kassim’s could be a possible candidate to return and helm the commission under the administration of Malaysia’s newly-formed Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

Dr Mahathir added that those suspected of any wrongdoings or crime will also be barred from leaving the country.

“This is to facilitate the authorities to conduct investigation against the suspects,” he said.
