Bung Moktar to resign as Felcra chairman at month-end

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin will resign from his role as Felcra chairman at the end of this month.

This move follows Barisan Nasional’s loss to Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 14th General Election.

“I will submit my resignation letter, God willing, by the end of the month,” he said when met at Menara Dato’ Onn here on Saturday.

Yesterday, the Council of Eminent Persons had met with the Felcra Bhd leadership to discuss the organisation’s operations and performance. However, they did not discuss the status of the Kinabatangan Member of Parliament’s status as the agency’s chairman.

Meanwhile, on an unrelated matter, Bung Moktar said BN component parties which fail to contribute and offer any strength should leave the coalition.

Bung Moktar, who is also Umno Supreme Council member, said BN would not be affected if any ineffective parties do not want to remain as part of the coalition.

It would be better for these parties, he said, to leave BN instead of remaining an enemy within, disrupting the coalition’s plans to regroup after its loss in GE14.

“Umno still has the support of the grassroots and remains the backbone of BN. We see some parties not contributing anything, so why are they still with us.

“This may leave us with a small team but as long as it remains tight, we can contribute to the party’s victory,” he said.

Bung Moktar was asked to comment on the possibility of BN collapsing if several component parties leave the coalition.

Asked on whether he was referring to MCA and MIC, both of whom lost heavily in GE14, Bung Moktar said he has never asked any parties to leave BN.

“We’re not asking anyone to leave. Whoever wants to remain, let’s continue but those who wish to leave, be my guest.”

In GE14, among the worst performing BN coalition partners were MCA, which won only one seat and MIC, which won two seats. Gerakan lost all seats it contested.

Several Sabah component parties have left BN after GE14, among them the Liberal Democratic Party and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS).
