KUALA LUMPUR: Commercial Crime Investigations Department (CCID) policemen literally had their hands full counting the cash in various currencies seized from apartments in Pavilion Residences on Friday.
At 9pm, 11 hours after the process began at the CCID headquarters in Menara 238 in Jalan Tun Razak, 11 bags of cash were taken to Bank Negara Malaysia, where another round of counting is expected to take place.
Highly-placed sources said the 11 bags contained tens of millions ringgit.
The sources said 26 bags of the 72 which had been seized had been taken to Menara 238 earlier in the morning.
Having only completed counting cash in 11 of the bags, the remaining 15 will be taken back to federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman to be stored till tomorrow, when the process will be restarted.
On Friday, CCID policemen seized 72 bags containing cash found in one of the apartments, belonging to a “Tan Sri” said to be a close associate of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The other two units in the luxury apartment complex are said to belong to Najib’s family members.
The counting process was made especially tedious because CCID policemen needed to record the serial number of each note. Another factor adding to the length of time it would take to complete the process was the fact that there were several different currencies involved.
It was also learnt that Bank Islam had been engaged to evaluate the jewellery and gold bars which were seized along with the cash.
Federal CCID director Datuk Seri Amar Singh, when contacted, confirmed that the counting process had been done, but declined to elaborate.
This, he said, was because he did not want any misplaced speculation about the cash and other items seized.
