KUALA LUMPUR: Police have never closed the files on its investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
Police, he said, have instead shifted their focus and will provide its fullest cooperation to the newly set-up 1MDB investigation committee and 1MDB investigation task force.
“We began this (1MDB) investigation years ago, and will continue to probe it from a police perspective by using the Penal Code, Companies Act as well as the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA).
“We will continue our investigations via these three legal provisions; for example, AMLA (will be used) for ill-gotten gains,” he told a press conference in Bukit Aman on Friday.
He said police will also cooperate with all parties, including the two investigative committee and team formed by the Council of Eminent Persons. They will also work together with the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice.
Meanwhile, commenting on the transfer of power to Pakatan Harapan and how it affects the police, Fuzi said there has been no directive on any major upheavals.
“Police are loyal to the government of the day.. there is no issue. We are professionals, we do not choose sides. Our key role is to safeguard the nation’s security and safety at all times.
“The most important thing is that there are no troubles following the transition of power, We are grateful that it (transition of power) was done smoothly,” he said.
Fuzi also said that Federal Commercial Crime Departmenr chief, Datuk Seri Amar Singh Ishar Singh, who was due to retire in June, will have his contract renewed for a yet to be determined period. “He is involved in assisting the 1MDB probe by aiding the investigative committee and special team, so there is a need for his contract to be resumed,” he said.
Asked on Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador’s appointment as new Special Branch director, replacing Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, Fuzi said this was a normal process, with Mokhtar’s contract having ended.
