'10 GST cases don't reflect reality'

ONLY 10 complaints have been recorded in the two days since the zero-rating of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Jamil Salleh said the ministry was conducting checks on premises as it believed the number of complaints did not reflect reality.

“In the past two days, only 10 complaints have been recorded nationwide. Three of those cases are in Melaka.

“This number is too small. We believe that there are many who may not be aware of the zero-rating of GST,” he said after conducting surprise checks on business outlets in Tangga Batu Permai and Sungai Udang here yesterday.

He said traders who failed to reduce prices would face action under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act.

On the case involving an eatery in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, that was found to have charged customers higher despite the zero-rating GST, Jamil said a notice had been sent to the eatery’s operator and if the eatery was found to have intentionally raised prices, action would be taken.

“We have 2,200 enforcement officers nationwide, and they are monitoring and conducting checks.”
