PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he will only accept food, flowers and fruits as gifts from well-wishers, but nothing else.
In announcing a slew of measures to mitigate corruption among government officers, Dr Mahathir said he would not accept any kinds of gifts apart from the three he had mentioned earlier.
He was addressing a press conference after a Cabinet meeting by the anti-graft committee meeting today, which decided to implement a new “no gifts policy” with immediate effect.
“If there is anyone here who wants to present me with gifts, I will not accept them.
“But you can give me flowers, food and fruits but no more than that.
“We will reject everything else... cars (and such) we will reject them all. The same goes for all top government officers.
“They cannot accept any gifts. This because those who had presented gifts are also as guilty as those who received them.” -- Report by Azura Abas, Syed Umar Ariff, Irwan Shafrizan Ismail and Zanariah Abd Mutalib
