BUTTERWORTH: Penang has no policy to provide financial assistance to flood victims.
"We have no such policy (providing cash aid to flood victims)," said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow when met after the official opening of Package 12A of the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP) here today.
He was asked if any financial assistance would be provided to the recent flood victims.
Chow said from the report he received yesterday, there were still several temporary flood relief centres opened to house flood victims.
"Looking at the change in weather patterns, we expect the weather to further improve.
"We expect all flood victims can return home in a day or two.
"As what we have practiced, we house the flood victims in temporary flood relief centres and provide them with the necessary assistance while there," he added.
As of this morning, there are still 578 flood victims housed in temporary flood relief centres in all three districts on the mainland.
Yesterday, Chow said the state government had spent nearly RM400 million for flood mitigation projects in the state over the past 10 years.
"Since 2010, we have spent nearly RM400 million to minimise the risk of flooding," he had said.
On Tuesday, a total of seven temporary flood relief centres were opened in three districts in the state to house some 220 victims.
The number of flood victims has since increased.
