JOHOR BAHRU: The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, today said his late father had channeled his salary from the government to a fund for the purpose of helping the less fortunate.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Sultan Ibrahim said his father had given the money to the Sultan Iskandar Foundation.
He also informed that the tradition continues with the Sultan Ibrahim Foundation where all of his royal allowances are given to the fund to help people in Johor.
The fund provides financial aid for education, welfare, scholarships for the poor, medical as well as assistance for senior citizens and disabled persons.
"The Sultanate of Johor, from the time of Almarhum Sultan Sir Ibrahim Abu Bakar in 1899 has always donated salaries as Sultans allocated for Johor to help the needy in the state.
"This effort continued and was streamlined during the time of Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Ismail where the money was channeled to a fund known as the Sultan Iskandar Foundation," the statement said.
Additionally, when Sultan Iskandar was made the eighth Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (1984-1989), all of his salaries and allowances received from the federal government were given to the foundation.
"The Sultan Iskandar Foundation not only helped the poor but the fund was also used for education purposes, disaster relief and computer literacy projects.
"All revenue and income of the Johor Sultanate come from plantation management from the time of Sultan Sir Ibrahim until now, as well as other businesses including real estate," the statement added.
