KANGAR: The government will review the Amanah Dana Anak Malaysia 2050 (ADAM50) in light of the country's current debt predicament.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said she would discuss the matter with the Finance Ministry in the near future on whether the scheme would be axed or continued.
"I will discuss with Finance Minister (Lim Guan Eng) as it involves funds and the country is facing financial burden.
"I cannot promise it (ADAM50) will be continued," she said at a press conference after the national level Parents Day celebration here, today.
ADAM50 was a scheme started by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government, announced by then Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the 2018 Budget.
Under the scheme, a baby born within Jan 1, 2018 until 2022 will receive initial saving of RM200 via units of ASB (for Bumiputera) and AS1M (for non-Bumiputera) as long as the child is registered within a year from the date of birth, but the savings could only be withdrawn after the child reaches 18 years-old.
Previously, Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) announced that ADAM50 would proceed as planned.
Meanwhile, Wan Azizah who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said the ministry took serious view of the incident in which a mother was alleged to have thrown her baby from the second floor of a building at the Hentian Kajang bus station recently.
She said, while the act was allegedly committed by an Indonesian citizen, the case received much attention from Malaysians and the ministry was prepared to provide the best support for the sake of the mother and the child's welfare.
