KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia may not have qualified for the Fifa World Cup in Russia, but it was “represented”, at least in a small way.
It must have been a proud moment indeed for SMK Meru, Klang, Form Two student Adam Riezman Roslam when he was chosen to carry the match ball out for last night’s Round of 16 game between former world champions Spain and hosts Russia.
His involvement in the tournament came about after he won a skills tournament organised by Kia which also got him RM800 in prize money.
The money, however, must have been insignificant compared to the chance to be a part of such a prestigious event as the World Cup.
So it was that Adam had the chance to carry the ball out of the tunnel at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in a line-up that included such well-known names as David De Gea, Gerard Pique and the one player who turned out to be the hero of the match, Igor Akinfeev, the Russian goalkeeper who saved two penalties and sent the host nation into the Last Eight.
